SHARK offers PRCA $50,000 to end cruel & deadly steer bustingIn April 2005 SHARK offered the PRCA $50,000 to rid itself of its biggest public relations headache – steer busting (also called steer busting and steer tripping). Click here to see video clips of PRCA steer busting. WARNING: THESE GRAPHIC IMAGES ARE VERY DISTURBING. The PRCA's response to SHARK's generous offer was dead silence. When SHARK representatives offered to meet with PRCA officials to discuss the offer, they were snubbed. When SHARK representatives held a press conference in Colorado Springs, Colorado (where the PRCA is headquartered) to announce the $50,000 offer, the PRCA hastily arranged a press conference of its own to be held a half hour earlier than SHARK's in a failed attempt to prevent local media from seeing the damaging footage of PRCA steer busting they knew SHARK representatives would present. The PRCA holds its steer busting events in out of the way places and times, such as weekday mornings. Steer busting events are usually not publicized. This is designed to discourage attendance by all but the most hardcore and insensitive rodeo zealots. As a result, steer busting events have very low turnouts, and that is exactly the way the PRCA wants it. Steer busting is the PRCA's biggest embarrassment, but it has neither the collective will nor the ethics to make even this minor humane advancement. It should be noted that no other major rodeo association even allows steer busting, including the Professional Bull Riders (PBR), the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA), the National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA), the Womens Pro Rodeo Association (WPRA), the International Pro Rodeo Association (IPRA), the National Senior Pro Rodeo Association (NSPRA), the Indian Rodeo Cowboys Association (IRCA), the Pro Armed Forces Rodeo Association (PAFRA), the International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA), the American Jr. Rodeo Association (AJRA) and the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA). |
