What You Can Do(1) Please write, call, and fax the governor of Illinois to protest his state’s support of animal abuse. Demand that Illinois' humane laws be strictly enforced!
The Honorable Rod Blagojevich Below is a letter sent by an animal supporter to the Governor. Dear Governor Blagojevich, I am writing to express my concern for the animals that have been used in the National High School Finals Rodeo. Are you aware of the cruelty and violations of law that occurred when the finals were in Illinois in 2000, 2001, and most recently in 2006? It is shameful that the state is allowing, much less paying, these abusive people to return in 2007. This is a black mark the Land of Lincoln will wear for many years to come. I demand that you spare no effort or expense to protect animals in rodeo, and that those who violate humane laws are prosecuted to the fullest possible extent. Sincerely,Your Name NOTE – Please pass any response you may receive back to SHARK at: Shindi@sharkonline.org Below is another letter that an animal supporter sent to Gov. Blagojevich: Dear Governor Blagojevich: I heard a rumor. I heard that the state of Illinois has some of the best humane laws in the country. If that's true, I'm wondering why Illinois will be hosting the High School Rodeo Association this summer. Are you aware of the cruelty and law violations that occurred when the finals were in Illinois in 2000 and 2001? The following is an article from the Leader newspaper from August 9, 2004: A $55,000 check helped convince the National High School Rodeo Association to return its rodeo to Illinois in 2006 and in 2007. With check in hand, Chuck Hartke, director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture, Kevin Gordon, assistant state fair manager, and Amy Bliefnick, newly named bureau chief of business services, saddled up and traveled to a Wyoming rodeo to meet with the National High School Rodeo Finals Board to lasso the deal. Why is the Illinois Department of Agriculture using taxpayer money to bring animals in to your state so that they can be exploited and abused for human entertainment? I urge you to take action so that the laws that were painstakingly passed in your state to protect animals are put to good use. Sincerely,E.B. (2) Write the Director of the lllinois Department of Agriculture, the agency charged with enforcing the Humane Care Act for Animals, and demand a full investigation into the abuse at NHSFR 2006! The Journal-Register didn’t deem it relevant to cover SHARK’s press conference regarding blatant abuse at the rodeo, lack of humane enforcement, the corrupt and wasteful Illinois government, or the issue of FBI and State Police insinuations about SHARK’s presence at the rodeo.

Letter to the Editor:
Well folks, they pledge allegiance to the flag, they pray to God, and then they beat the hell out of the animals.
Shame on Springfield, Illinois for bringing rodeo to their town and the marketing of it as “family entertainment”. It is equally repugnant that the State Journal-Register Newspaper secondarily condones this animal brutality with their “fluff” “journalism”???? Why don’t you present rodeos HONESTLY?? Any good reporter should know that truth prevails only when questions are asked. Questions & research are their stock in trade. Without them, the truth is rarely revealed. If anyone should understand this, it should be a reporter.
Today’s rodeos do not reflect the “true cowboys” of the past. They bear no resemblance to ranch work. For “real cowboys” on “real ranches”, great care was taken to inflict as little trauma as possible so as to prevent injury.
One of the most “cowardly” events in rodeo is calf-roping. In this event the “cowboy stooge” ropes a baby animal, jerks it off its feet, body slams it to the ground, ties its legs so it can’t move, and drags it by the neck. These babies frequently suffer broken necks and backs, severe bruising, internal hemorrhaging and crushed throats and trachea.
At the National Steer Busting Finals in Amarillo, Texas, held Nov. 19-21, 2004 nine dead or crippled and likely doomed animals were dragged out of the arena. Another staggered out while bleeding from the mouth. At another rodeo spectators watched a horse go into death shudders after breaking its neck.
Won’t you please visit www.sharkonline.org. Showing Animals Respect & Kindness. Damning video documentation from their rodeo investigations has been used around the country and internationally. Publicity from SHARK investigations has shut down various rodeos across the U.S.
So, State Journal-Register Newspaper, if you do a story, you should tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
Many states, counties and cities have banned rodeos. Please visit SHARKS Web site. Their video clips of tormented rodeo animals are horrific.
Thank you,

Please contact the supporters of the 2006 NHSRA Finals Rodeo and tell them they should be ashamed to be affiliated with such cruel, criminal behavior.Click Here |
