Ag Officials Betray Humane Assurances
July 24, 2006
Dr. O'Keefe,
There are a few issues we would like to raise with you. This is not a complete list, but what we remember at the moment.
1. Contestants should certainly not be allowed to continue to fight with, additionally stress and endanger animals after their time limit is expired.
2. Some bulls had their tails pulled in the morning. That behavior apparently went unchallenged by the Department, and it was much more consistent in the evening. If this did not torment the bulls they rodeo people would not be doing it. It should not be allowed.
3. At least one animal, a horse, was shocked. There was no stalling or chute fighting beforehand. I read in the Journal-Register where a vet for the rodeo assured there would be no prods. They should know we will use it on them.
4. Horses were being hit in the face with a coil of rope evening.
5. Bulls were being jabbed with a pen in the evening. If they are born to buck, why are they being jabbed?
6. There have been some serious foul ropings. If you wish to allow the rodeo people to dictate catch-as-catch-can taking precedence over the Illinois Humane Care for Animals Act, so be it, but it will not look good in the public relations area.
Overall, things were rougher in the second performance than the first. I hope this will not be a trend.

Action to stop the abuse would be far more welcomed. There are numerous incidents of foul roping that absolutely should not be tolerated. We recommended, and continue to strongly recommend that foul roped animals should be immediately released. Catch-as-catch-can equals a violation of the Illinois Humane for Animals Act. There are contestants who continue to pursue their (often foul roped) victims after time has elapsed. Why is this being allowed? The pulling and working of bulls' tails continues. This is not the full list of violations, but if you won't deal with these, what is the point of going on? We will, however, continue to make a record. We don't want anyone to be able to say they were uninformed. Steve Hindi SHARK

The Bureau of Animal Health and Welfare has had field staff at each performance. They have had access to all areas of the ring and there have been no observed violations of the Humane Care for Animals Act. All actions by the rodeo contractor staff have been within normal livestock handling practices. If you feels there have been violations then you can take your evidence to the Sangamon County State Attorney's office.
